Meer dan 5000 fotografen uit 125 landen bij World Press Photo
On Friday 8 February 2008 the results of the 51st annual World Press Photo Contest will be announced during a press conference at theBoekmanzaal in the Amsterdam City Hall, Amstel 1. Established in 1955,World Press Photo is the premier international contest in the field of photojournalism. From 11 a.m. (C.E.T.) the winning images of the competition will be presented in a large screen projection with the jury members attending. The photos will also be published on World Press Photo’s website: http://www.worldpressphoto.org/.
The judging period started on Saturday 26 January and will continue until Thursday 7 February. This year, a record number of participants sent in their work, a total of 5,019 photographers, which is an increase of 12.5% compared to 2007. The total number of images submitted is 80,536. Of all participants 80% chose to enter the contest by uploading their work online.
The participants come from 125 different countries. The trend of an increasing number of photographers from Central and South America continued for the 2nd year in a row, with 20% more participants fromthat area than last year. Photographers from Brazil (131), Argentina(74), Peru (47) and Colombia (41) were the most active - countries where World Press Photo has long-established exhibition and educational activities. Almost 20% of all participants in this year’s contest are from Asia. China’s 400 participants come second overall after the USA (748 photographers). India is well-presented as well this year with 165 professional photographers entering the contest.
The first exhibition with the award-winning images will be open to the public at the Oude Kerk, Oudekerksplein in Amsterdam on Tuesday 29 April 2008. This exhibition will be on show until 22 June 2008 and will subsequently travel to some 100 cities in 50 different countries around the world.
